|
Karl Jenkins writes of the last two tracks: “‘Elegia’ and ‘Cantilena’ are two short pieces which started as musical sketches prior to my composing Cantata Mundi. One of the musical ideas in ‘Cantilena’ may be heard in ‘Cantus - Song of Tears’ from Cantata Mundi.” Note that “Cantilena” and “Elegia” are considered bonus tracks, and some editions of Cantata Mundi may not contain them (the US edition, pictured above, does).

Sony Classical, 1998—SK 60668 Lyrics (transcribed by Suvi Kaikkonen) 1. Mare Crisium (Sea of Crises) Introitus 2:51
|
“A musical interpretation of thirteen of the Latin titles given to what was believed to be areas of water on the Moon.”—Karl Jenkins
(1-3: The London Philharmonic Strings / 4-7: The Smith Quartet / 8: The London Philharmonic Strings / 9-13: The Smith Quartet / The London Philharmonic Strings: Karl Jenkins, Conductor / The Smith Quartet: Nic Pendlebury, Charles Mutter, Ian Humphries, Deirdre Cooper)Excerpts from the booklet: The first movement I adapted and used for the ‘Shadows’ A Diamond Is Forever television commercial for a worldwide campaign. The middle movement I have since rearranged for two female voices and string orchestra, as heard in “Cantus Insolitus” from my work Songs of Sanctuary. “Adiemus Variations”: These variations for string quartet are based on the first movement of Songs of Sanctuary.—Karl Jenkins
“A few differences from the UK and US releases. First, it has an extra track: ‘Adiemus (Full Version)’, which has the extended out-tro. It’s length is 5:24 and this is the 10th track on the CD. The CD itself has only a blue background with white lettering, no images reproduced on it. The back of the CD box looks much like the US and UK releases, but with the 10th track indicated and some Japanese info—in Japanes and English—on it. The main booklet has a new cover: a photo of a dolphin taken from under-water, all in blue & white. The inside has the text and the photos, along with a Japanese translation.”—Paul J.A. van Vliet
Songs of Sanctuary
Virgin, 1995—CDVEX 925 7243 8 41004 2 1
“A cardboard box with the CD and a booklet. The artwork is very different, much in the style of the European Cantata Mundi release! The thick booklet (which does not fit inside the CD box) has mainly photographic artwork. Jenkins’ text is repeated and added to! He comments on several song-titles. (Key sentence here in the description of Adiemus: ‘Many think that the word is Latin, but it is, in fact, invented as part of the “sound language” I use as text.’) The CD was It features 2 extra tracks: 10. Tintinnabulum (Radio Edit) and 11. Kayama (Radio Edit).”—Paul J.A. van Vliet
Adiemus (CD Single)
EMI-Electrola/Akropolis Musik & Film GMBH, 1995—7243 8 82018 2 7
“The Adiemus Single, which is made in Germany, contains 3 tracks: Adiemus - Radio Mix (3:39), Adiemus - Main Extended Version (5:24), and Adiemus - Percussion Mix (5:56). The Radio Mix is the shortened version of Adiemus (Main Extended) and is heard on the UK and US release of ‘Songs of Sanctuary.’ The Main Extended Version is exactly like the Radio Mix, but has the extended coda, along with an incredible electric guitar solo! The Percussion Mix starts out with only percussion and vocals (from the coda). It then transitions into the Main Extended Version with the extended coda, but this time having a saxophone solo! On the cover there is an awe-inspiring picture of four dolphins jumping out of the ocean! Even though extremely hard to find, it is a great single for those who like a little more modern sound to Adiemus and is definitely a classic!”—Kyle Kinkade
Adiemus Remix (CD Single)
EMI-Electrola, 1995—7243 8 82096 2 5
“Contains 4 dance remixes, not very good in my opinion. They’re the Beta Single Mix (3:36), Beta Mix (5:53), Gamma Mix (5:15), and Alpha Maxi Mix (5:16). Remixed by Ingo kays and Tony Catania. My copy was made in Holland. Interesting trivia: cover is a drawing of a metal dolphin acting as a DJ with 2 turntables...”—Paul J.A. van Vliet
Kayama (CD Single)
Virgin, 1995—7243 8 93233 2 0
“Features 4 tracks: Kayama (Radio Edit) 3:58, Kayama (Full Version) 8:06, Hymn (Piano Version) 2:37, and Adiemus (Radio Edit) 3:39. The must-have here is Hymn: same vocals, but accompanied by solo piano! The K-radio edit is a shorter cut & paste. The A-radio edit has cut the second half of the recorder solo. The cover looks much like the back of Songs of Sanctuary with a picture of a dolphin added.”—Paul J.A. van Vliet
Kayama Remix (CD Single)
EMI-Electrola, 1995—7243 8 82322 2 7
“Five tracks, all titled Kayama: Radio edit 4:12, Double AA Mix 7:09, Trance Mix 6:56, Hip Loop Mix 6:55, All Or Nothing Mix 7:45. These mixes are quite well done (by Double Aa Achim Oppermann & Achim Sobotta), especially the fourth mix, which simply puts a dance-beat under the entire song. The cover is like the regular single, but not in blues but in oranges and yellows.”—Paul J.A. van Vliet
Tintinnabulum (CD Single)
EMI-Electrola, 1995—7243 8 82378 2 6
“Three tracks: Tintinnabulum (Radio Edit) 4:01, Tintinnabulum (Album Version) 10:57, and Cantus Iteratus 6:36. The radio edit is not that exciting, nothing else is new. The cover has the word Tintinnabulum in large letters splattered all over, against red, purple, light blue, and yellow background.”—Paul J.A. van Vliet
Cantus—Song of Tears (CD Single)
Sony Music Media, 1997—SMM 664282 1
“Contains 2 tracks: Cantus—Song of Tears (Radio Edit) 3:19, and Chorale V (Arama Ivi) 1:21. The radio edit is much shorter, not bad: the entire song has been restructured. The front cover is similar to the Canadian CD cover, but instead of the angelic figure, there’s a bird. This image is repeated on the CD itself. The back of the front cover has the image of the Cantata Mundi CD with the German text ‘Horen Sie Adiemus 2 in voller Lange: 15 Songs zum “Abheben”.’ (Which translates as: Listen to Adiemus 2 in full length: 15 songs to lift off with.)”—Paul J.A. van Vliet
